An honorable gentlemanBy ananda01In the world of reality TV and the 24 hour news cycle; reading J.F. Culver's letters what stands out to me is his point of view that effuses everything he says. Despite war; separation; and family tragedy; he has and maintains a very concrete view of the world where everything fits in God's plan that seems very foreign to how we talk to each other and relate now that can be quite touching. His letters are frequent; long and detailed. Since the people in the company with him are also from Pontiac; IL; it is possible to contruct knowledge of a group of people from the town as he keeps his wife updated on the men with him and as he comments on the updates she has sent him about those back at home. It's a portait of what happened to the town in bits and pieces of offhand information. The notes in particular help with this since they have researched the people mentioned filling in what is known about them from census records and from other letters not included.I also found it really fascinating to follow all the details of how the postal service works not only during the 19th century but during a time of war. They discuss back and forth about needing but not having access to stamps; about sending letters to be personally delivered by acquaintances moving back and forth; about sending letters with people to be posted in major cities as railroad lines are captured and destroyed by rebel troops. They also discuss where they will be as the troops move or as Mary moves away from Pontaic and stays with various relatives to avoid the battles. The details of all their movements and how they keep up trying to send mail ends up painting a picture of life at time and what places in the country were less disrupted and where the real effect of the war was being felt. The combination of J.F Culver's education and writing skill; his position in the community; his position in the army; his point of view; and his love for his wife make this a moving and unique way to understand truly what it was like for a husband; wife; and community separated by the Civil War.
