Franco-Americans brought their proud cultural legacy to Lewiston-Auburn beginning in the mid-nineteenth century. As their population grew; religious leaders became community leaders; building an independent parish and a support system; as well as providing child care. The Sisters of Charity cared for the sick and orphaned and ran the first bilingual school in Maine. Franco-Americans grappled with their own questions of patriotism; identity and culture; assimilating as Americans while preserving both their French and French Canadian backgrounds. Authors Mary Rice-DeFosse and James Myall explore the challenges; accomplishments and enduring bonds of the Franco-Americans in Lewiston-Auburn.

You will care; whether you like it or notBy AmazingCustomerExcellent book on the spiritual wars that have gone on since time immorial but is more so today. Takes you on a path which exposes those who do not believe nor have faith and how others have attacked businesses and churches for their beliefs; and the stories are all true. The author gives the references and are easy enough to find. The Bakery story in NYC was very sad. Intolerance of another's beliefs are beyond reprehensible. Fortunately I've not run into such callous disregard and I hope I never will.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. This should be your next readBy KevinI recently received this book and have read it cover to cover. Obviously Erick and Bill are writing from a conservative viewpoint; but the facts presented are undeniable. This is a must read for anyone who cares about the direction of the country. It's not just anecdotal evidence they provide; rather they clearly describe the disturbing direction that our country is currently heading. They document the choices we've made and where we've strayed. This is important so that we can reverse course and not repeat the same mistakes. As Erick credits Matt Lewis for the idea behind the book; the most important point is that Erick and Bill decided to write it. Thankfully they did and your friends will thank you if you give me them a copy. I've already bought one for a friend and plan to purchase others.Whatever is at the top of your reading list; pause it and make this your next read.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good people who try to live their lives according to ...By Jenifer TruittI think of myself as a conservative citizen and voter. I read my local newspaper; and occasionally listen to the news. However; I was actually shocked to read this book and to learn about attacks on our religious freedoms in the US that I had no idea were happening. Good people who try to live their lives according to Judeo Christian values have been persecuted to unimaginable degrees; and it seems these instances are only the beginning. Quite honestly; my eyes have been opened and I am seeing more clearly the need to step up and advocate for what is right. I see how very critical our next election is; we must elect a leader who will stand for and defend our God-given rights. Even if you think you are informed; I strongly recommend You Will Be Made to Care. Most likely you will find that there is so much more happening than you could've possibly imagined.
