The author; Edmund DeWitt Patterson; joined Company D from Lauderdale County; Alabama; even though he was from Ohio and had only been in Alabama a short time when war began. He was captured at Gettysburg and ended up in prison at Johnson's Island in Lake Erie near his home in Ohio. This is very insightful of the struggles of families divided in their support and political beliefs.
