In The Intimate Lives of the Founding Fathers from Smithsonian Books; historian Thomas Fleming; author of The Perils of Peace; offers a fresh look at the critical role of women in the lives of Washington; Franklin; Adams; Jefferson; Hamilton; and Madison. Fleming nimbly takes readers through a great deal of early American history; as our founding fathers struggle to reconcile the private and public–and often deal with a media every bit as gossip-seeking and inflammatory as ours today.

I provides clear insights into the characters and the decisions they made. In doing so; it raises questions about some deeply held beliefs: for example; was Neville Chamberlain an "appeaser"; or was he merely buying the time the RAF needed to build planes; train pilots and deploy the radar that was so essential to victory? The book goes to great lengths to describe the accomplishments of Hugh Dowding; Air Officer Commander-in-Chief of the RAF fighter command; the decisions he made were instrumental in maintaining air superiority and winning the Battle; yet when the official history of the Battle of Britain was written; his name was not mentioned; perhaps because of the enemies he made in making those decisions. Those who chose to read this on a Kindle should be aware that it does not accommodate X-Ray searching.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Unknown HeroBy studebhawkThe story of the Battle of Britain remains one of great heroism and determination. This story; masterfully weaved together from various sources by Michael Korda turns the focus of the Battle of Britain on the strategy and tactics of the air war. The air war tactics devised and implemented by Air Marshall Hugh Dowding are brilliantly described here by the author; Michael Korda. The author’s effort is thorough and told in a readable manner to the delight any armchair history fan. This story of the air war; the strategy and tactics devised by Air Marshall Dowding played a major role in the defense of the British Isles. The story is clearly about a largely unknown hero of the Battle of Britain. The fall from grace of Hugh Dowding; when the air war was virtually won; provides a sad note to what was a great victory. Hugh Dowding was truly a hero of the Battle Britain; likely unknown to many to this day.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
