Along the way; he shows how Grandfather has changed; and has been changed by; the people of western North Carolina and beyond. To tell the full natural and human story; Johnson draws not only on historical sources but on his rich personal experience working closely on the mountain alongside Hugh Morton and others. The result is a unique and personal telling of Grandfather's lasting significance. The book includes more than 200 historical and contemporary photographs; maps; and a practical guide to hiking the extensive trails; appreciating key plant and animal species and photographing the natural wonder that is Grandfather.

KeehnA well written and researched account of the often nebulous distinction between loyalty and disloyalty during wartime. Focusing on the Civil War era era; this book looks at how loyalty/disloyalty was dealt with by federal and state governments as well as political parties and the general public. It is notable for its fresh perspectives; cogent explanations; and indepth research regarding previously unexplored topics. These include the unprecedented provost marshal system instituted in each Congressional District; the role of the military in Civil War politics; intimidation at the polls especially in the border states; and attempts to punish Confederates and the South generally during Reconstruction. It is well worth the time of anyone interested in these issues and makes a significant advance in Civil War scholarship.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This was very detailed and read more like a text book for a graduate level course on ...By Wilbur BeauregardThis was very detailed and read more like a text book for a graduate level course on Civil War laws. What was interesting was all the political manuevering that went on during the war and how it played out in the background. There was a lot more than the great Confederate General heroes. The minutia made it hard to read. Still; I read it and enjoyed an aspect of the war I crave to know about because this is an aspect no one reads about or knows anything about.2 of 4 people found the following review helpful.
