Remarkable ReadBy NancyAs the daughter of a veteran survivor of the SS Pan Pennsylvania I read this book with a keen interest and can say that the author did a phenomenal job of recreating the true historical events as a story that truly captivates the reader and makes him feel as if he is there. From the recreation of the battle to the search and discovery for the long missing U boat we are taken on an emotional roller coaster ride that encompasses everything from fear; anxiety; determination and camaraderie to pure joy and elation. We learn the dangers encountered in diving through the background stories of the divers whose relentless sense of adventure and search for the truth led them on this journey. The author did an impeccable job in his research and; although I knew the ending; I was overwhelmed by the vivid details and the accounts of the unlikely friendships and the bonding that occurs in wartime and peace. It is a remarkable read and; once started; a book that can not be put down. I highly recommend it.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. In the class of Shadow DiversBy Bob StinchcumGreat book--it starts with the commissioning of the sub; its first battle and the sinking. Then follows the location efforts and the discovery--300 feet down; very cold water and very limited visibility. I held my breath every time they went down. Then they have to document which sub it is then they interview the sub survivors in Germany. Tragically one of the US ships pulled away from picking up survivors and 40 men died in the cold waters but the reason is one of those hard choices in combat that have to be made.It is in the class of Shadow Divers.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. UnforgettableBy Madeira LeePeffer brings the seaman's perspective; the reporter's instincts; the novelist's craftsmanship and the hero's sense of adventure to bear in his telling of this amazing story. The commander of the Nazi submarine comes face-to-face with the US captain who has sunk his vessel and the two of them become true friends. But the heart of the book belongs to the men who against long odds decide they will find this submarine -- buried by more than 300 feet of water and 60 years of time. What brings and holds together the remarkable swaths of history; technology; ingenuity and exploration is Peffer's deep commitment to finding and revealing the underlying humanity in each endeavor. One finishes the book understanding that these seemingly disparate threads were destined to be woven together by the connections that emerge in this masterful reconstruction.
