Desperate to seize control of Kentucky; the Confederate army launched an invasion into the commonwealth in the fall of 1862; viciously culminating at an otherwise quiet Bluegrass crossroads and forever altering the landscape of the war. The Battle of Perryville lasted just one day yet produced nearly eight thousand combined casualties and losses; and some say nary a victor. The Rebel army was forced to retreat; and the United States kept its imperative grasp on Kentucky throughout the war. Few know this hallowed ground like Christopher L. Kolakowski; former director of the Perryville Battlefield Preservation Association; who draws on letters; reports; memoirs and other primary sources to offer the most accessible and engaging account of the Kentucky Campaign yet; featuring over sixty historic images and maps.

Sweeney does a great job of introducing us to St. Francis in the context of the 13th-century culture that he lived in and showing us his influence on the Catholic Church. He does all this without wallowing in meaningless detail or in the mawkishly-sentimental mythology that has built up around the saint. A book worth reading...and re-reading...and re-reading.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Whom shall I send? Send me; said Francis!By Janet NailTo many people; Francis of Asissi is a harmless statue in the garden; pleasant to look at but not important. But Francis is more than that; Francis is saint who began by believing Jesus; by following the commands of Jesus. Sell all your goods and give to the poor? We think of that as metaphorical; but to Francis; this was a literal command. If it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of Heaven; the answer is to renounce riches and pay attention to what matters. Jon Sweeney has presented us with a saint who believed in Jesus; who followed Jesus; who set out to emulate Jesus. He identiies the gifts that made Francis the effective emissary of God who could rebuild the church because he understood that the church--that God--is not about accumulating wealth or having power. This is an enlightening and refreshing look at this most beloved saint.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. One of the best books to read to get a grip on the real St. Francis.By Rita SmallingThis is a well-written scholarly account that separates likely fact from fable to give us a reliable account of everyone's favorite saint. This is also not a long book; so you will not get bogged down.
