With the abolition of the slave trade in 1807 and the emancipation of all slaves throughout the British Empire in 1833; Britain washed its hands of slavery. Not so; according to Marika Sherwood; who sets the record straight in this provocative new book. In fact; Sherwood demonstrates Britain continued to contribute to and profit from the slave trade well after 1807; even into the twentieth century. Drawing on unpublished sources in areas of British history which have been previously overlooked; she describes how slavery remained very much a part of British commerce and empire; especially in the use of slave labour in Britain's African colonies. She also examines some of the causes and repercussions of continued British involvement in slavery and describes many of the shady characters; as well as the heroes; connected with the trade - at all levels of society. After Abolition contains important revelations about a darker side of British history which will provoke real questions about Britain's perceptions of its past.

Review
5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. I Appreciate the Effort but WAY OFF!!!By Abdulla M. Al QasimWhen I read the title I was so keen to buy the book; even more so after reading the synopsis. I had the book for a while and I have to say that I really appreciate where the author is coming from and what he is trying to accomplish; but he was beyond ignorant about the subject!I gave up on the book before even getting to Chapter 2! I have given up on three books in my life; this was the second; because it was just wrong and misinformed! The author got basic undisputed facts about Islam and the origins of Islam wrong!! This is information that elementary kids know! The author states that the Prophet was born in Medina!!! No he wasn't he was born in Makka and migrated to Medina!!! It's like saying something like Jesus was born in Yemen and moved to Palestine!!!!The author then talks about Abraham and states that Muslims believe that Abraham was actually a noble from the pharaohs and that he married his own sister!!! NO MULISM BELIEVES THAT!!! Where is he getting this from!?So after reading these glaring mistakes that the author has made it was really difficult to take anything he said; so I just had the book shredded! Seriously! If I could give this book a zero rating I would!Word of Caution: Please be weary of this book... it is laden with misinformation and mistakes!
