WilliamsIf you are interested in WWII; and especially the Russian Front; you need to read this first person account. No heros; no politics; just a young naive 18 year old who enlists in the WAffen SS. It's his personal account of his time and experiences from 1942 until detained as a prisoner at war's end.Absolutely rings with sincerity and truth. Not literature; but very good history of a type seldom found. The only history I read anymore is first person. I don't want; or need; someone "interpreting" for me. This is a valuable account.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I really enjoyed reading this bookBy William S.I really enjoyed reading this book. A first hand account of non-German personnel serving in the German army on the Eastern Front. His story starts from the beginning of the war; his enlistment and serving on the Eastern Front. From there it goes through his time in the east; being wounded and his amazing story of the retreat during the breakout and finally his jail sentence in Belgium. It certainly kept my attention.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Very informative; but either glosses over or forgets eventsBy Glen ParryExplains his reasoning very well for his initial decision to join the SS. No mention of any of the atrocities or the beliefs behind the atrocities that were committed by SS branches.Would have you believe that he acted in self defense at all times and was loved by nearly every Russian family that they forced themselves on.Seems typical of the self delusion that was apparently prevalent at the time.Still a good read; even if only to shake you r head at what he wants us to believe about his motives. Sad part is; he actually appears to believe his " noble cause"'
