The Sages is the first book to appear in English by the charismatic Jerusalem rabbi; Binyamin Lau. It offers fresh perspectives on the individual characters of the Jewish sages (Chazal); the historical contexts in which they lived; and the creativity they brought to the pursuit of Jewish wisdom. This first volume in a three-volume set examines the teachings of the Men of the Great Assembly; Yosi Ben Yoezer; Hillel; Shamai and others of the Second Temple Period.

One of the best books on the subject I've readBy Christopher WebberThis thick book is full of a wide range of information that you won't get elsewhere. It has little assumed knowledge and gets down to basic information like the structure of the Naval commands; how naval personnel were raised; all sorts of things that might otherwise be padding but which are not included in any other book that I have read on this subject. In fact I would recommend reading this book before reading any 18-19th century historical novel/ war story; it provides such excellent background knowledge. Lavery is a naval historian so he's strongest on that side; but even so he does a decent job covering every aspect that you can think of. The book is easy to read though perhaps some more detailed maps would have helped. You still need to read other books to get the German view but; as this book fills in some of the cracks left by other books; It must be regarded as essential to anybody interested in Operation Sea Lion.
