An important bookBy irene HizmeA riveting book detailing how Charlie Lelonek fought to protect himself and his family from the life threatening danger that the Nazis presented. Told in the first-person narrative it traces the horrendous events that took place from 1939-1945.Letters written by family member from 1946 -1948 document the families condition during the war and after. Historical context provided.Written by the grandson; Gary Lelonek; MD; Charlie emerges as an optimistic man determined to make a new life in a new country despite the atrocities he suffered. He shows; once agin; that one individual can make a difference. I; too am a Holocaust survivor.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A lesson in resilience and determination in the face of great adversityBy AviPhDOnce I picked up the book; which I planned to read over my vacation; I couldn't put it down. What an amazing man; what stories; what resilience! And that he went on to live a normal life and raise seven children afterwards; seeing grandchildren; etc. speaks to his strength of character. How does one survive years of starvation; punishment and such sorrow the way Charlie did? Our modern day lives are charmed in comparison.Although the narrative; based directly on the interviews with Charlie Lelonek; was in broken English; I could hear Charlie speaking directly to me. It was authentic.I especially liked the historical context sections. It was very useful. I now have new leads to pursue in researching my own family history. As painful as it was to read about the atrocities of WWII; I was pleased to read about how Charlie fought back as part of the resistance. Indeed; he fought Ike a lion. I was glad I got to know him by reading this book. I highly recommend it.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A great book about a true hero!By LaziThis is a fascinating book; about a true hero! The book is well written; and backed up by many testimonials. The effort put into the research for this book comes across in every page and detail.I am always grateful for being able to read those kind of books; and remember how precious life is; but when it is telling the story of part of my family; I feel extra emotional and blessed.Thank you Gary for all the time you invest in documenting the family history; and your grandfather's story.I highly recommend everyone to read this book; and to learn about another Jewish hero!NEVER FORGET!
