Description

1860: The American capital is sprawling; fractured; squalid; colored by patriotism and treason; and deeply divided along the political lines that will soon embroil the nation in bloody conflict. Chaotic and corrupt; the young city is populated by bellicose congressmen; Confederate conspirators; and enterprising prostitutes. Soldiers of a volunteer army swing from the dome of the Capitol; assassins stalk the avenues; and Abraham Lincoln struggles to justify his presidency as the Union heads to war. Reveille in Washington focuses on the everyday politics and preoccupations of Washington during the Civil War. From the stench of corpse-littered streets to the plunging lace on Mary Lincoln’s evening gowns; Margaret Leech illuminates the city and its familiar figures—among them Abraham Lincoln; Jefferson Davis; Robert E. Lee; William Seward; and Mary Surratt—in intimate and fascinating detail. Leech’s book remains widely recognized as both an impressive feat of scholarship and an uncommonly engrossing work of history.

Review
5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. No index makes finding places extremely difficultBy Jane in AtlantaAn index would be a great improvement. This book contains 24 walks and they are described in detail. But the book lacks an index. That is a major oversight. For example; say you want to see the Frederic Delano House (FDR's uncle). But you don't know anything more than the name of the house. It would be almost impossible to find it; unless you get lucky paging through the book and happened upon page 152. Or; if you already knew that it was in the Kalorama neighborhood and went on that particular walk. Without that luck or prior knowledge; you would never locate it. And this is a problem. I will now try to buy a walking DC book that has an index.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. ok.By TR250Nice walks.....would like to add the walk along the lake from MLK memorial to FDR memorial and on to the Jefferson is filthy with trash; mud/water on the trail and low hanging branches making the walk less than pleasurable......a bit of a warning in the book would have been nice.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Easy to followBy Aprime2Good set of tours for walking the city. Did two on a recent weekend visit. Tours would be easy to combine into longer tours. Found details for building interiors and hints on what to see very helpful and interesting.
