An Excellent Popular HistoryBy Carl RobinsonWar to the Knife is an excellent popular history of the Bleeding Kansas affair of the 1850s that was a preview of the much larger Civil War that engulfed the entire country in the next decade. This book tells the story of that conflict from the point of view of contemporary voices. In other words; the author Thomas Goodrich strings together letters; diaries; interviews; and newspaper clippings to describe the conflict in the voices of those who lived through it.The book is pretty neutral; although the Jayhawker Militias that arose after 1858 don't come off in a very nice light. John Brown's murderous activities are also ably shown. Perhaps the most insightful and applicable to modern day times was the description of the first Kansas winter. The newly arrived Slave Owners from the sunny south struggled to keep their negroes alive through the freezing conditions. In short; the lure of cheap; low quality labor led to disastrous social consequences. The Middling Classes of the North were under such thread from the Plantation Class of the South that they organized for violence and emigration in Kansas with singular purpose of ending slavery. The Slave Holders held on to their useless property despite the clear evidence for the crushing costs. It is good for modern Americans to compare Bleeding Kansas and modern American economic and racial policies. It could help avert future trouble. On the whole this was an excellent and enjoyable read.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Four StarsBy Kyle JonesPretty good book.
