War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America's Colony

PDF War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America's Colony by Nelson A Denis in History

Description

Originally published in 1867 as Mrs. Hill's New Cook Book this encyclopedic treasury of recipes; cooking advice; and household hints brims with insight into the culinary heritage of the South in general and Georgia in particular. With its return to print; the charming volume revises popular legends about the food ways of the Old South; revealing both the bounty of the Southern table and the expertise of the Southern cook.Annabella P. Hill (1810-1878); a socially prominent woman whose rural Georgia kitchen centered on an open fireplace; records the end of an age in American culinary history and adroitly chronicles the cookery of the South. She proves that nineteenth-century Southerners ate a veritable smorgasbord and that rural Southern cooks were more cosmopolitan in their culinary knowledge than has been previously thought. Many of the instructions here--including those for blending and roasting coffee beans--remain pertinent for the contemporary gourmand. To this portrait of Southern gastronomy; Damon L. Fowler adds a biographical sketch of Hill; an explanation of the customs that shaped her writings; and a glossary to assist in translating these time-honored recipes to the modern kitchen.

A terrific MOVIE! in the making!By Alexander RodriguezI was stunned and astounded by Nelson Denis’enthralling book; “ War Against All Puerto Ricans: Revolution and Terror in America’s Colony.” This book documents a "secret history" of Puerto Rico that is not taught in our schools - not in the US; and definitely not in Puerto Rico. Yet these events did happen; and they are presented this meticulously researched book with nearly 100 pages of footnotes as well as many intriguing photos of that epoch. Remarkably; even some of the footnotes are shocking. The author is a lawyer and the extensive research confirms that. The United States is on trial here. The evidence is clear; convincing; and deeply organized. Hundreds of FBI documents provide the most shameful proof of all. By the end of the book; the entire US government has been placed on the witness stand; cross-examined; and found guilty of stealing an entire island. But the deepest impression from this book is the way Denis told an electrifying story. The attempted assassination of Pres. Harry Truman; the Ponce Massacre; the Revolution of 1950; the Gunfight at Salon Boricua; the prison torture of Albizu Campos... all of these tableaus unfolded like a series of dramatic; high-action movie scenes. I could see these scenes playing; right in front of my eyes. My mind reeling as if I were in a time machine being transported to colonial Puerto Rico. This book would make one hell of a movie. It is based on a history that has never been told. There are 8 million Puerto Ricans and over 55 million Latinos that would eat it up. I could see Benicio Del Toro or Marc Anthony in the role leading role of Don Pedro Albizu Campos. Consider this an open letter to any smart and successful movie producer out there… The next great historical and socio-politically relevant moneymaking story has been tailor-made for you… And what and amazing movie it would make!3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. The Jackboot up close and personalBy Michael B. GreenLike the principal hero of his gripping anti-imperialist tale—Pedro Albizu Campos—Nelson Denis is a Puerto Rican graduate of Harvard Law School with a passionate love for his country and an angry contempt for the racist Anglos who have; by deliberate design; done it so much harm. There are many heroes whose stories are told in overlapping narratives that intersect at two great focal points; the Ponce massacre of March 21; 1937 and the assault of the independentistas on the U.S. Capitol November 1; 1950 in an unsuccessful attempt on the life of President Truman in response to the darkly concealed and only time that the U.S. military has engaged in massive bombing of its own citizens. To get to each of the points; and from one to the others; Denis takes us down the trail of U.S. betrayal of the Puerto Rican Independence Movement as the US claimed to liberate it from Spain while instead becoming its imperial master. Each step is spiked with the standard brutal suppression of labor and sovereignty; laced with arcane medical torture for its leaders; overt American colonial governors replaced with native-born compradors all the more insidious; coupled with a cruelty and cowardice of the oppressors matched only by the pride and courage of the resistance. Alas; as Denis himself remarks and conveys; all in vain; but foreshadowing the current “bankruptcy” which has been imposed on the island like its crown of thorns. This is Denis’s book and if he were in Fahrenheit 451° this would be what he has to say. It would be almost disrespectful to ask Denis about his next book because it would mean that one hadn’t understood this one. Parts of the book are impossible to write unless someone were there; but no-one was. How did he do it? Invention? Creative fiction? No; the author has spent a lifetime talking to the people who were there and survived; reading the records; watching the films; breathing the spirits and getting inside the hearts and souls of its agents. And so he wrote what happened to his heroes from their perspective; with their voices; and with their defiance and produced a heart-wrenching if all-too-familiar story that nobody else would ever have been able to tell.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Greatest Book ever on Puerto Rico's True History and current.By EnriqueI bought already 2 of these book's; one for myself and my niece which was delighted by the writer's passion of Puerto Rico's History. There's no doubt that Puerto Rico needs freedom needs Independence to coexist and that people who believed in Liberty were silenced and incarcerated for loving there island nation. I hope many more people buy and read this book because it literally brought me to tears as if u were living history today. After reading this book it makes me want to advocate even more for political prisoners such as Oscar Lopez Rivera who has been jailed for 34 years in u.s. prisions for his belief in Puerto Rico's Independence and contribute more for Puerto Rico's Independence for love of my identity my people my flag and my Country Borinquen.
