Black Saga: The African American Experience presents the people; events; and places that influenced the culture; identity; and perspective of Blacks in the United States. Beginning before 1492; with the African kingdoms; and ending with the civil rights movement and events into the 1990s; Black Saga's chronologically arranged summaries and factual entries provide a vivid; definitive picture of a complex history. More than a list of dates and events; Black Saga abounds with previously untold stories; such as those of escaped slaves Ellen and William Craft; California pioneer and entrepreneur Biddy Mason; inventor and businessman Jan Matzeliger; and civil rights activist Hannah Atkins. Demographic; economic; social; political; and cultural realities are combined in compelling narratives of achievement and of tragic oppression. Complemented by more than 230 illustrations; many of them rare; the chronology provides information on key issues and accomplishments. Informed by the unique voice

GreppinI've read other books by Brinkley; and his recent stuff (he's a professor at Columbia) is very well written; and has tons of wonderful detail. This book; hyowever; on Fr Caughlin and Huey Long; is an early one; and lacks the maturity of his current work; But it's a good read.1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Skip the TheoryBy J. SmallridgeRead a narrative history; this is a terrific work on two fascinating individuals. I learned a lot about Coughlin and Long from Brinkley's pages. I didn't appreciate -- or really care about -- the political theory that the author uses at the end of the book. I imagine this evolved from a dissertation so I can understand why it was included; but the book probably would have worked better without it.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
