Under God: Religion and American Politics

ebooks Under God: Religion and American Politics by Garry Wills in History

Description

From the end of postwar Reconstruction in the South to an analysis of the rise and fall of Black Power; acclaimed historian Adam Fairclough presents a straightforward synthesis of the century-long struggle of black Americans to achieve civil rights and equality in the United States. Beginning with Ida B. Wells and the campaign against lynching in the 1890s; Fairclough chronicles the tradition of protest that led to the formation of the NAACP; Booker T. Washington and the strategy of accommodation; Marcus Garvey and the push for black nationalism; through to Martin Luther King; Jr.; and the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and beyond. Throughout; Fairclough presents a judicious interpretation of historical events that balances the achievements of the Civil Rights Movement against the persistence of racial and economic inequalities.

Religion and America's politics: how one affects the otherBy Charlie AukermanNot everyone believes that religion plays and integral part in American political culture. This book proves otherwise. It's a sometimes funny; sometimes sad look at how religion affected elections in the 1980s; and how religion in America is. I think Wills was right when he characterizes America as a nation of mainline religious churches; but of evangelism as the mainstream religion in the nation.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. essential bookBy Jack Alan RobbinsI teach American Government under the Constitution and the area in which I feel I am weakest is on the role of religion in American political life; which I am now endeavoring to research. Garry Wills' book is a key to understanding this entire area of American history and political life and to a far better understanding of the Founding Fathers and what they were attempting to do. I have also found Wills' other books such as Inventing America and Explaining America to be most valuable; along with the books of Wood; Bailyn; Ferling; Morgan and others. It is also just a great read!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Garry Wills Visits Our Recent HistoryBy Jay NoelI am a big fan of Garry Wills. This is an older book but covers a time I well remember. Anyone studying religion and politics in America will profit from Wills' work. Are we repeating history today because we failed to learn from the recent past? I will definitely share this book among my friends.
