Was not sure if I wanted to buy the book; but when it came and I looked through the book was very happy with the purchase. Great pictures with captions; I recommend this book for any person who is interested in battleships and pre-war US Battleships.Michael0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Almost perfect...By Richard C. VaughanOutstanding quality and photos. the only thing I would have looked to see would have been a color profile of the California in 1941 with the cage masts. there were 4 color profiles after the reconstruction; but none before. That aside; the quality of the photography and reproductions thereof is absolutely exceptional.4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Chronicle of an amazing shipBy ArleneThis book was brought to my attention by a monthly newsletter from the Mare Island Museum whose archives the author had obtained most of his material from. The concrete building that housed the office I had worked in for a number of years was immediately in front of the building ways where the ship was originally built and big chunks of that building had been removed to allow room for it's bow. Not only has the construction of this famous ship been described in great detail; but the photos are incredible for the minute detail they portray. I was amazed at the amount of action this capital ship has seen even in addition to it's sinking at Pearl Harbor. I had served on the USS Kitty Hawk in the early sixties and this particular ship was long gone before I came on the scene; but the memories of shipboard life and dry docks came flooding back just looking at all those old photos. This book can soak up hours and hours of study and contemplation; a real gem it is!
