US Coast Guard in World War II (Elite)

ebooks US Coast Guard in World War II (Elite) by Alejandro de Quesada in History

Description

The ‘ShipCraft’ series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated; each book takes the modeler through a brief history of the subject class; highlighting differences between sister-ships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage; featuring color profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modeling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits; lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships; and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic gallery of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales; and the book concludes with a section on research references – books; monographs; large-scale plans and relevant websites. This is the first volume in the series not devoted to a naval vessel; but the most famous liner of all time is a suitable subject as one of the most popular of all ship modeling subjects. Apart from Titanic herself; this volume also covers her sister ships Olympic and Britannic which enjoyed longer and more varied careers; including wartime service as troopship and hospital ship.

I was unaware that the Coast Guard played a big role in the Pacific Theatre of Operations; and also sunk U-boats in the Atlantic. He also mentions USCG auxiliaries and civilian volunteers that contributed much to the home front. This is a good companion volume to the other Elite series book "The U.S. Navy in World War II". However; I found the illustrations to be a bit uninspired; as several of them are direct conversions of wartime photographs (Guardsman holding artillery shell; beach patrol with dog; etc.). The photographs are of good quality and variety. I would still recommend this book as a good introduction to the subject; as it gives good credit to USCG operations and sacrifices made during the war.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A Big War for a Small Service...By HMS WarspiteThe US Coast Guard's participation in the Second World War gets the Osprey treatment in this concise but well-written and heavily illustrated paperback. "US Coast Guard in World War II" narrates the overlooked role of the Coast Guard in the conflict; as it expanded rapidly from its pre-war law enforcement and lifes-saving duties. Author Alejandro De Quesada describes the Coast Guard service in every theater; including the amphibious assaults in the Pacific; the Battle of the Atlantic; and even the D-Day invasion. The US Coast Guard was and is the smallest of the armed services. It met its wartime missions by a rapid expansion using reservists; unpaid volunteers; and women in a variety of roles; including port security; escort duty; and rescue service. Its integration into the Department of the Navy put Coast Guard crews on a variety of traditionally naval vessels; and coast guardsmen in harm's way. The US Coast Guard's one Medal of Honor winner gave his life to rescure Marines in a tight place on a Japanese-occupied Pacific island. As with other Osprey editions; this volume has a variety of maps; photographs; and other illustrations; including depictions of the many wartime uniforms worn by Guardsmen. There is a short bibliography pointing the way to additional research for those interested; highly recommended.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. BriefBy Reviewer from TerraAn all too brief survey of the United States smallest military service barely scratches the history of it during world war 2.
