The author crafts this true narrative without getting bogged down in the endless details of maneuvering the boat in approach and attack. Even a reader new to reading about WW2 sub warfare can feel the tension; feel the concussive blast of a depth charge; and the quiet; cloying ; dripping humidity of silent running.A really good book and I highly recommend reading it!0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This was a very good written book with minimum foul language and extremely descriptiveBy T. E. WolfeTalk about heroes. WOW. These guys are the very definition of the word. This was a very good written book with minimum foul language and extremely descriptive. The central character is a sailor who leaves port (including pregnant wife) for parts unknown and doesn't return for two years right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. If this were the way the Navy dealt with sailors today; there would be no Navy. But it isn't today; it is war time.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. ... many find these WWII submarine recounts to border on dull; I personally enjoy reading about the entire experienceBy Jerry H.I know many find these WWII submarine recounts to border on dull; I personally enjoy reading about the entire experience. I am the son of a WWII Sailor who served on an LST landing the first day on the beach in Normandy. The observations and experience that comes through many of these war patrol books give the reader a better sense of the entire experience. The greatest generation deserves the moniker. The boredom and hardship they endured are remarkable.
