In 2008 a media firestorm erupted when snippets of Reverend Jeremiah Wright Jr.’s sermons were picked up by media outlets around the world. At that time presidential candidate Barack Obama was a member of Wright’s church; Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Wright’s words were frequently used to question the patriotism of Obama. The scrutiny over Obama and Wright’s relationship made Trinity UCC a flashpoint in the 2008 campaign. The Moment tells the inside story of Trinity UCC during this time of turmoil. Carl and Shelby Grant describe “the Moment†as it unfolded; from Wright’s first appearances in the media to Obama’s resignation from Trinity Church. They also provide helpful background information; including general history of the black church; African American immigration to Chicago; and black politics in the Windy City. In this context; the voices of Trinity UCC members come alive to show the impact of “the Moment†within and beyond the presidential election; illustrating the thorny intersections of religion; race; politics; and the media in the United States.

Lets make it simple and to the point. This way; we can better comprehend what is happening now.7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. MisleadingBy ALOverall; the book had an adequate survey of US History until the last few chapters; which were woefully inadequate. Ms. Sears has managed to completely erase Bill Clinton's presidency from History. She talks about how President Bush was involved in the Gulf War and then the very next chapter talks about President Bush's reaction to 9/11. I had to read it three times to truly convince myself that she had made no clarification that a) these were two different people and b) there had actually been an entire presidency in between them. Looking in the index for Clinton; one finds a page number... which leads one to an article on how Senator Hilary Clinton ran for president in 2008. I understand Ms. Sears needs to keep it brief to contain the entire History of the United States; but if it was a space issue she could have perhaps thrown in a line about Clinton instead of how Joseph Kennedy had an affair with Gloria Swanson. I'm not an author of an American History book; but I somehow think the former is more important. So my final opinion is this: if you are buying this book for an American history buff; pass because it's very much a survey and won't have anything new. If you are buying this for someone unfamiliar with American history; which I believe is the intended purpose of the book to begin with; pass because the person reading it will come away misinformed and confused.1 of 6 people found the following review helpful.
