Where was Berdan?By Gloria chisholmThe U.S. Sharpshooters was a great idea which did much to further the Federal victory in the Civil War; although it seemed to have a tough time getting started; including being armed. However; the unit's success seemed to be in spite of Berdan rather than because of him. He was totally without military experience and seemed incapable of gaining any. He seemed mainly concerned with becoming a brigadier general while avoiding the battlefield. There were so many charges and countercharges that went nowhere. He had a real knack for alienating the subordinates who could most help him. About the only credit he deserves is for coming up with the idea.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Gave me new insight into the US SharpshootersBy Richard A. GimbertIn previous readings; I had come to understand that Berdan was disliked. I had even read historian Stevens' book; but I did not realize that Berdan was a coward. This book advanced that thesis. It also advanced the assertion that the 1st US Sharpshooters were held together by Trepp. This book is beneficial to ones understanding of the US Sharpshooters in the Civil War but must also be accompanied by other books on the same subject to give the reader a greater understanding of the men and the dynamics around the best that the Army of the Potomac had to offer in the Civil War.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. excellentBy ColBuckshotEnjoyed reading; very interesting.Well written and informative. One of the best books on this subject. Will go to the front of my library in the civil war section.
