At one time; Wyoming provided most of the ties for the nation's railroads. Knights of the Broadax; the Story of the Wyoming Tie Hack; recalls the period beginning in 1914 when strong men; mostly Scandinavians; were carving railroad crossties out of the upper Wind River mountains. Their only tools were their own brute strength; a crosscut saw; a broadax and a double-bitted ax. A good Hack could cut as many as 50 ties a day; with most destined for the Chicago and North Western Railroad. Set against the breathtaking beauty of northwestern Wyoming; this story in words and more than 180 photos; takes the reader back to a way of life lived in near isolation; with only the company town owned the Wyoming Tie Timber Company. By the early 1930s mechanization began to influence the business as 3-man mobile sawmills became available; though the cut trees were still skidded out by teams of horses. Then the advent of World War II created a new dilemma: an increased demand for ties and fewer men to cut them; as many were called in service to their country. As a solution; the company secured a contingent of German prisoners of war and put them to work on the 1945 drive. Over ten million hand cut ties were snaked out of those woods over the years by the Company--brought out by flume and stream to be floated 100 miles down the Wind River to Riverton each summer in a magnificent drive before further mechanization finally signaled the end of the era in 1946. The Tie Hacks who created the legend are long gone; but their memory has been perpetuated in a 14-foot-limestone monument that stands on a lonely knoll overlooking the site of the first Tie Camp. This is their story.

Such an amazing story!!!By MatthewLet me start by saying that I don't finish 8 out of 10 books I start and when I do I usually take my time to finish. I could not put this book down! Anita's story is so captivating and the narration is perfect. It is a story of a young Jewish girl living in Germany at the dawn of the Third Reich up until and just beyond the final solution; Hitler's declaration to exterminate all Jews. She does an excellent job explaining the persecution both her family and those around her endured. She ultimately finds Christ and he serves as her light in a world that had grown so dark around her. Despite her unfortunate conditions; God provides miracles to her in so many ways that I constantly found myself tearing up as I flipped the pages. If you love Jesus; read this book! Life on the Edge of Hell with your hand in Jesus' handBy Fiona McLeodA very heartwrenching tale of life in Germany during wartime. It is told by a young Jewish girl who had an Aryan father. So she did not "look Jewish". She was able to escape some of the worst things; but life was no less fearful. She lost many family and friends... was abandoned by her father at first and later her sister. She and her mother managed to get by; but it was a look at what life was like during wartime for the ordinary German and for those who were "caught in the middle" of the bizarre situation created by Hitler's hatred of all things Jewish or whatever he found to dislike about anyone or anything. The most amazing thing is that through the ministry of a local Pastor who was amazingly brave ... she and her mother found Christ and their relationship with Christ miraculously protected them or aided them many a time. Jesus walked through it all with them. I have never read anything from the point of view of a Messianic Jew in Hitler's Germany. This woman was Jewish but believed I. Jesus as her Messiah. Rather than blaming God for the holocaust she places the blame squarely where it belongs....Satan. often when talking to Jews about Jesus they bring up the holocaust and use that as a reason to not become a believer in Christ. However this book details the life of Anita who not only survived the war's horrors but does so with her faith renewed; and intact.There are many who do wrong and claim the name of Christ; and shame on them...but there are also many who are truly believers and were instrumental in saving countless Jewish lives.It's not just a book about the deliverance of the Jews at the war's end; it's a book about the deliverance of us all from the bondage of sin through the saving grace of Jesus Christ. For that alone is true freedom.
