Translating Totality in Parts: Chengguan's Commentaries and Subcommentaries to the Avatamsaka Sutra

PDF Translating Totality in Parts: Chengguan's Commentaries and Subcommentaries to the Avatamsaka Sutra by Guo Cheen in History

Description

Angus Konstam sets sail through the brutal history of piracy; separating myth from legend and fact from fiction. Pirates takes us into the depths of the pirate's dark world; examining the many colorful characters from Cretans and Vikings to French corsairs and the British rogues of the golden age of piracy; such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd and even two women pirates; Mary Read and Ann Bonny; who became pregnant to avoid execution. A blood-soaked; riveting account; it provides a complete history of the fearsome threat on the high seas from the marauders in the pages of antiquity to the Somali pirates in the headlines of today.

Only shadows on the wallsBy a. bernsteinAlthough this is a worthy effort; may I be forgiven for saying that this book requires some painstaking editing. In its current form; it can only convey an overall impression of the material it is attempting to present; as it contains too many translation errors; inconsistencies and lapses in coherence—all avoidable. It is to be hoped that Rev. Guo will be inspired to make the necessary revisions in a subsequent edition.1 of 3 people found the following review helpful.
