Transformations in Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa (African Studies)

DOC Transformations in Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa (African Studies) by Paul E. Lovejoy in History

Description

This book discusses the Christian doctrine of sin in relation to sexual abuse of children and the Holocaust; allowing these pathological situations to illuminate and question our understanding of sin. Taking seriously the explanatory power of secular discourses for analyzing and regulating therapeutic action in relation to such situations; the book asks whether the theological language of sin can offer further illumination by speaking of God and the world together. The book is unusual in discussing the Holocaust in relation to Christian doctrine.

Detailed Study of Slavery inside AfricaBy gt surberReview – “Transformations in Slavery: A History of Slavery in Africa” by Paul Lovejoy. 3d Edition 2012“Transformations in Slavery” is a detailed study of slavery in Africa. Dr.Lovejoy states in his Preface to the first edition (1979) that the history of slavery in Africa; as opposed to the Atlantic and Mid Eastern diaspora of Africans via enslavement is extensive and poorly studied. This 2012 edition is the third edition of this book; the first having been published in 1979.Dr. Lovejoy examines the numbers; utilization; process of enslavement; marketing; and development of slavery inside Africa; concentrating on the Fifteenth through the Nineteenth Centuries. This is not a diatribe against slavery; nor an apologist essay. This is a fact and number filled overview of slavery in Africa as it existed from the fifteenth century through the nineteenth century. The detail as to numbers and locations is astonishing. The history is much more complete than I knew existed. Dr. Lovejoy throws much light on the development of plantation farming over these years and on the role of the Muslim traders; and how their changes from warrior to reformist impacted the slave trade and slave utilization. Dr Lovejoy gives us an understanding of the four major forms of slavery; Kin vs not Kin; plantation and other production; harem; and military. Dr. Lovejoy gives us a view of the impact of the European abolishment movement and some details as to how that movement affected the interior slave trade in Africa. The book is well and clearly written. The charts and maps are helpful. The formatting on my ipad and iphone was good. This book is essential for anyone wanting to understand slavery as it existed in Africa and how that impacted both the Atlantic and the Muslim markets for slaves.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good info; bad presentationBy LaughingLionHoly cow. This book is repetitive as all hell; and is apparently written for fourth graders. The text is excruciating to read. The information underneath the nonsense is useful; but parsing it from the dreadful writing is inglorious labor.
