His exploits in a P51 are legendary; his AF career one of the greatest. There are many great memoirs of WWII by amazing fighter pilots and I have been searching for as many as I can find; all to supplement my own knowledge of flying these wonderful aircraft. I just finished my fourth aviation novel; called "Charming Billy;" http://tinyurl.com/oh8t6nm and will be using some of Coi. Anderson's experiences in my next one. He mentioned flying regularly with William Overstreet; famous for flying under the Eiffel Tower during an air battle. He was chasing an Me-109 at the time and was not about to allow it to escape by flying through that building. That was the kind of pilot Anderson flew with; men so aggressive and brave that it is hard to comprehend. Anyway; this book of Anderson's recalls the incredible bravery and of these men and his own expertise as a test pilot. I enjoyed every second of it. Five stars.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A well written page turner. This guy is a *somebody*.By LegacyDriverAlthough this book has a different feel to it than the book to which it will invariably be compared; namely Chuck Yeager's "YEAGER" autobiography; I must say it stands on its own feet without any apologies. In this book; Anderson details a life full of accomplishments and adventure. The chapters that focus on his World War II exploits are clearly the most interesting; although his post-war adventures (including missions in Vietnam) were entertaining in their own right. My only complaint is that he did not write more about this period of his life. It seemed that Yeager's book was a bit more balanced in that he covered his career from beginning to end with an even hand. Anderson (or his publisher) chose not to do so; and that is unfortunate; for I am sure there is much to be learned from this period of his remarkable life. Despite these minor shortcomings; this one is definitely worth a look. The beginning may be slow to some; but keep going. It is well worth it.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Terriffic book for WWII aviation enthusiastsBy Edwin J. Nellis; Jr.This is a well written account of a WWII fighter pilot's experiences during the air war in Europe. The air battle scenes are described in terms even a non flier could visualize in one's mind's eye. The P-51 Mustang was the premier US Army air Force air superiority fighter; and was flown in combat over Germany in support of daylight bombing missions by the 8th Air Force. The Mustangs were the sharp point of the spear against the Luftwaffe; and Bud Anderson was a triple ace. He was gifted with extraordinary eye sight; and was a skillful marksman in air-to-air combat. This book is a must for anyone who thinks WWII history is important; particularly the air wars. Anderson also extended his flying carreer to flying jets in combat in Viet Nam. Very interesting individual; who is well described in this book.
