Selena Axelrod Winsnes has been engaged; since 1982; in the translation into English; and editing of Danish language sources to West African history; sources published from 1697 to 1822; the period during which Denmark-Norway was an actor in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. It comprises five major books written for the Scandinavian public. They describe all aspects of life on the Gold Coast [Ghana]; the Middle Passage and the Danish Caribbean islands [US Virgin Islands]; as seen by five different men. Each had his own agenda and mind-set; and the books; both singly and combined; hold a wealth of information - of interest both to scholars and lay readers. They provide important insights into the cultural baggage the enslaved Africans carried with them to the America's. One of the books; L.F. R¯mer's A Reliable Account of the Coast of Guinea was runner-up for the prestigious International Texts Prize awarded by the U.S. African Studies Association.

It ONLY deals with a small segment of Tibetan Amulets...a single group that is limited to a single sect....and the high Lamas of that single sect; to boot. Not only have most Chinese and Westerners never seen or likely to come in contact with these; most Lamas in Tibet have never encountered them! What may be worse than this limitation is that the book IGNORES the hundreds of OTHER GOOD AMULETS that Tibetans have used for centuries.....amulets that are of a mixed group of materials; images; sizes and purposes. The field is so rich with possibilities that is is unconscionable that this author bypasses them to concentrate on that single brick in a wall so full of varied symbolism. Do not waste your money unless you are looking out of arcane curiosity or for advanced Doctoral study.2 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Not enough practical informations!By Julien BourgaultThis book furnish the reader with two sets of magical objects: the 109 amulets taken from a work titled "srung 'bum rdo-rje 'phreng-ba" and the 102 tibetan cakras from another work titled "srung-'khor brgya-rtsa-pa". However; the author dont provides all the information one would need to construct and empower these magical objects for personal use. Well; what we may certainly have here is another amulet book written by an author who most probably never made a single amulet in all his life... So; one question may certainly arise here: why furnish the reader with 109 amulets and 102 cakras without giving that same reader the complete information he needs to make use of these amulets and cakras (if it happens to be his wish to do so)? Personally; i think that giving these essential informations would have been very nice as it would have been respectful to all types of readers; and not only to those who are uniquely interested by the theoretical aspect of that subject. However; an effort was done to furnish the reader with many amulets and cakras from two obscure sources. For that reason; i dont give that book only one star but 2 1/2. A regrettable low rating however; a rating that would have probably been avoided if these amulets were accompanied by complete explanations about how to make; consecrate and use them. Then; that book would have most probably deserved a 4 or maybe even a 5 stars rating. Sadly; it dont! Now; for the reader interested by Tibetan charms and amulets; here's another book on that subject:"Tibetan Tantric Charms and Amulets"; by Nik Douglas.(See my review of that book).
