Irish immigrant Florence Burke has lived in Massachusetts for more than a decade but he's still a tenant farmer and his family lives in near-poverty. He came to America for a better life; but finds his adoptive country less than hospitable. Florence recognizes that owning land is the path to prosperity; but the bank won't grant him a loan and he's running out of options. An opportunity arises that could make his dreams come true; but it involves great personal risk to both himself and his family. He recalls the gamble he took when he fled the Potato Famine in Ireland; and wonders if he could make a gamble on his life one more time? Will his wife and children understand his decision to join the war? Yours Faithfully; Florence Burke is based on nineteen original letters from my great; great grandfather to his wife and children. It is a story of one Irish immigrant in a million struggling to make it in America at a time when the nation is divided.

The book presents facts dealing with a specific regiment that was engaged in most battles fought in the Northern Virginia campaigns. The 3rd Ark lost nearly 90% of its original roster from disease and combat. The troops were given mundane jobs building battlements to leading charges. This regiment was known for their Arkansas toothpicks and being deadly shots. They were also known for the unsanitary conditions of their campsites. It's a book that's hard to put down.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. very informative; well researched.By roger surrattVery detailed. My great; great grandfather served with both the 3rd 10th regiments. One very silly complaint...author uses way to many exclamation points!!!!!!!!! Seems like every other sentence he feels obliged to convince me to feel excited when "the men double timed up the hill!!!" Like canned laughter on TV sitcoms. I'm sure i'm the only one who noticed so if the author is still alive he should'nt lose any sleep.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. "Arkansas Toothpicks" Were Among Civil War's BestBy R. P. WarrenThe Third Arkansas Infantry Regiment; C.S.A. fought in almost every major battle in the east during the Civil War. Nicknamed the "Arkansas Toothpicks" for the double-edged knives they carried; the men of the Third were well-known and widely feared. As part of Gen. John Bell Hood's Texas Brigade (Longstreet's Corps; Army of Northern Virginia); the men of the 3rd Arkansas found themselves in some of the fiercest fighting in the war in places such as the famous "sunken road" at Antietam; Chickamauga; and the Battle of Gettysburg.Originally published in 1959; the book is typical of many regimental histories written; some by amateur historians; around the time of the centennial commemoration of the Civil War fifty years ago. Still; the book provides a solid account of a bold and hardened regiment that paid a high price in its service to the doomed Confederacy. Of the 1;353 soldiers who fought in the 3rd; only 144 were left to stack arms when the Confederacy surrendered. The book also carries the complete muster rolls as of July 5; 1861; the roll of recruits who enlisted prior to July; 1861; and the parole list at the time of surrender. This is "must" reading for all students of the Civil War.
