A Lot to be LearnedBy CustomerI read Ms.Phillips' account of Europe's development -her rise and now what looks like her fall - with amazement.I was fascinated by the amount of research and scholarship that undoubtedly went into this book;also; by the skill with which the author guides us through the battles of religious and intellectual efforts to conquer Europe; and through Europe - the world.Having been born; educated and brought up in Engand; I was especially interested in how all this affected British policy and behaviour up to the modern time.I am about the same age as Ms. Phillips; and the events she describes are exactly as I remember them. That is to say; the gradual weakening of social obligations; the fuzzing of the division between right and wrong (all that relativism!) ; the confusion and weariness of people too exhausted to put up a fight for what they know to be right.Luckily; I'm not a nail; since Melanie Phillips has hit the nail right on the head; so many times in this book; that my head would be quite flat by now.The author is not very optimistic at the end of this book. However; with all the negative aspects of Europe; which we are all aware of and cannot forget; most of us would not like to witness its demise; so let's all make a big effort to keep it alive.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.
