PDF The Wars of the French Revolution and Napoleon; 1792–1815 (Warfare and History) by Owen Connelly in History

Description

The USA's contribution to the making of the USSR was accidental. In the belief that the Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic could not survive; American statesmen strove to keep the former Tsarist empire intact for a non-communist successor regime in the face of attempts by other powers to carve out spheres of influence in both European and Asiatic Russia. In this manner; they unwittingly facilitated the formation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. This book shows the importance of the 'Russian question' at the Washington Conference and throws light on the emergence of the 'Versailles-Washington' system of international relations.

Manley"The Wars of the French Revolution and Napoleon; 1792-1815" written by Owen Connelly is part of the Warfare and History Series published by Routledge in 2006.Connelly is a professor at the University of South Carolina and has written ten other book--mostly focusing on the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars. In the introduction; Connelly promises to address and answer eight topics or questions. 1. The effect of the population explosion on the conduct of war? 2. The causes of the Wars of Revolution and the Napoleonic wars? 3. What was the legacy from the ancien regime on the Revolutionary armies? 4. What was the impact of the Revolution on the armies? 5. What were the contributions of the governments from the early Revolutions to Napoleon? 6. Was Napoleon unique in his accomplishes? 7. What did over two decades of war accomplish? 8. Was the era of the Revolution and Napoleon a turning point in the history of warfare? This book delivers on Connelly's promise. The bibliography reveals an extensive research of the topic and he covers each battle thoroughly in an easy to read and understand manner. The book also includes 20 maps to help the reader understand the movements of each army and Europe in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Any history student interested in a thorough overview of the Wars of the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars. There are many excellent books that address these wars; but this one is unique in that it focuses on both the Revolution and Napoleonic wars rather than on or the other or specific battles. Following the overview from this book; books with a more specific focus could be added.December update: I purchased this book for a graduate course that I just completed. It was easy to read--I did get bogged down a little in some of the battle descriptions but compared to most military history books it isn't too intensive when describing the battles. It was a great overview and really helped me get an overall understanding of that era. If you like Napoleon or military history this would be a good book to begin your study.5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. The WarsBy Vanguard 18Nice readable book that gives a good account of military events in this time period. Easy read that doesn't get bogged down in details. Would recommend to those who would like to gain an entry level perspective into this crucial time period in European history.
