The Viking World

PDF The Viking World by James Graham-Campbell in History

Description

Navigation at sea was a matter of guesswork until well into the 19th century. Changing that became the obsession of Matthew Fontaine Maury. While others built railroads; Maury mapped highways of wind and current over the seas. Hearn uses Maury's career as a window on America's maritime development in the 19th century; including the clipper-ship era of the 1850s; the rise of steam and steel; and the Civil War.

This seems to me more like a cultural history; thorough and detailed text with lots of photographs; but any maps are few and far between.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. great bookBy Johnny in Texasgreat book3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Key supplement to Viking LoreBy JHeckelThis is one of those base rock books if you are interested in extending your general knowledge of the Viking era (and who isn't after being engrossed in The History Channel's The Vikings?). The Viking World has wonderful photographs and illustrations. It does focus more on the artistic and cultural side of the Vikings.
