More than 60;000 books have been published on the Civil War. Most Americans; though; get their ideas about the war--why it was fought; what was won; what was lost--not from books but from movies; television; and other popular media. In an engaging and accessible survey; Gary W. Gallagher guides readers through the stories told in recent film and art; showing how these stories have both reflected and influenced the political; social; and racial currents of their times.

Good history of the regiment but a disappointing bias from the authorBy Joe OwenMichael Dan Jones has written a history of a Confderate Rifle Regiment that was a part of the famous "Wheat Brigade" of Louisiana that was in the Army of Northern Virginia during the Civil War (1861-1865). The author has written a good account of the history of the regiment; however; his personal viewpoints of the cause of the Civil War and the "noble cause of Southern States" has made this a distraction to read. This is unfortunate because as a history of the regiment; Mr. Jones has written about is excellent; but for the author to take the beginning two chapters of the book and make a defence of the secession of southern states and quoting various historical figures in defence of secession altered my viewpoint of this book from the beginning. While the history of the regiment is accurate; the author also puts in various pages "the noble sons of the noble cause"; "the great secession for states rights" and other personal opinions that have no place in the book that is supposed to be about the regiment and their history. I understand that an author has every right to state his opinions in a book; however; the author must understand that historical books should be for ALL readers to know more about a certain historical regiment; battle; etc etc.The American Civil War is a contentious viewpoint that still lingers after 150 years since the beginning of the war. It is a sad statement that some modern authors today take a historical regiment and though they can be accurate about its history; they make it a "soapbox" to "preach" about their personal opinion about the right for any state to seceede; and it is incomprehensible when they defend "states rights" and make the point that the Civil War was not about slavery. This does an INJUSTICE not only of the history of the regiment but the soldiers who were in the regiment. Though the author has excellent and accurate history of the battles and the men the regiment was composed of; I can't recommend this book for those who want a fair and reasonable history of this fine regiment that fought in the Civil War.2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An Excellent History of a Famous Military UnitBy Elaina BordelonThis was a well-researched history of a remarkable company. In response to a previous review; I felt that the author's tone and commentary were appropriate. This is the history of a Southern company; so to be told from a Southern perspective was not out of bounds. Mr. Jones is obviously passionate about his subject and I appreciate the time and care he took on this history. I hope we see much more from this author in the future.
