The Struggle against Slavery: A History in Documents (Pages from History)

ebooks The Struggle against Slavery: A History in Documents (Pages from History) by David Waldstreicher in History

Description

A monumental investigation of the Supreme Court's rulings on race; From Jim Crow To Civil Rights spells out in compelling detail the political and social context within which the Supreme Court Justices operate and the consequences of their decisions for American race relations. In a highly provocative interpretation of the decision's connection to the civil rights movement; Klarman argues that Brown was more important for mobilizing southern white opposition to racial change than for encouraging direct-action protest. Brown unquestioningly had a significant impact--it brought race issues to public attention and it mobilized supporters of the ruling. It also; however; energized the opposition. In this authoritative account of constitutional law concerning race; Michael Klarman details; in the richest and most thorough discussion to date; how and whether Supreme Court decisions do; in fact; matter.

Amply illustrated and narrated source bookBy HHThis is a collection of primary sources documenting slavery's impact on American history; ideal for more mature younger readers. Secondary students who would like to study the past as historians do; rather than simply read what historians have to say about it; will be quite taken by the numerous original texts in this book -- from throughout the antislavery movement up until emancipation.Waldstreicher's book begins with some instruction on what historical documents are and how they should be interpreted. The story of slavery in America is divided into six chapters: the slave trade and the lives of slaves in the colonies; the effect of the American Revolution on the institution; the battle against slavery in the North; a picture essay on slaves and their clothing; slavery and rebellions in the South; and the Civil War and emancipation. For each chapter; Waldstreicher provides a general introduction; then original texts in Roman type with a brief introduction for each in bold. Numerous reproductions of documents or other illustrations are included in the margins; along with additional short quotes from contemporary sources. A wonderful addition for the young historian's first library!
