Description

On March 27; 1950; the author turned 17; ten days later he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his training in Fort Belvoir; Virginia; he first learned of the "police action" in Korea; and like many others he volunteered for duty there. His biggest fear was that the action would be over by the time he arrived in Korea. Private Morrow was assigned as a rifleman in the 24th Infantry Regiment Combat Team; one of the most outstanding units in Korea and the last all black army unit; he served with distinction until he was wounded. After a short stint in Pusan; he became a paratrooper and rigger in the 8081st Airborne and Resupplying Company stationed in southern Japan. Throughout his time in the service; Private Morrow had to face the institutional racism of the U.S. Army where black soldiers consistently served longer and performed more dangerous duties than white soldiers. The effects of this on the 18-year-old private were longterm--and are described here.

A treasure.By Raisuli the MagnificentAs per another review this doesn't give a full accounting of the entire conflict/ Not only does it miss out on the war int he south; but it also eschews the French and Spanish contributions in terms of their fleets tying down the British navy; otherwise this book gives a really incredible account of the buildup to the actual war; and the more well known war in the northern colonies (states). The truly terrific thing about this book is that it lets the people who were there tell their accounts by way of written documents; letters; journals; speeches and other writings. You will read the accounts of Concord and Lexington as told by officers and enlisted men in the British army; as well as militia of all all ages and both sexes. You will read Jefferson on the necessity of taking up arms against the British Crown. You will read Thomas Paine's rhetoric about how these are the times that try men's souls. You will read the Declaration of Independence and Parliament's response. You will read Washington bemoan his troops; and Lafayette revel in the great struggle. It is a tome for the ages. And to me it's just amazing that more Americans are not familiar with the words.within this treasure of a book. These are the thoughts and words upon which our nation is founded; and is a must read for anyone interested in how our nation came into being.Again; it has a few shortcomings; but is otherwise many times its weight in gold.A must buy for all Americans.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This is NOT a narrative.By DoodleGExcellent source for primary references. This is NOT a narrative. It is a collection of documents and quotes; that you piece together to make the story. If you know the story of the AWR then it is great. It gives back-ground details that fill-in the gaps of your knowledge. However; if you do not know the story; this will utterly confuse you.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Primary Source CollectionBy Keith C.This is a great collection of letters and diary entries written by those who participated in the great events of the American War of Independence - even the unsavory characters like Banastre Tarleton who is revealed to us in a letter to his mother ( if you know anything about his violent nature -some say war crimes - it is difficult to imagine him having a mother)The maps are also outstanding!
