The Seventymile Kid: The Lost Legacy of Harry Karstens and the First Ascent of Mount McKinley

DOC The Seventymile Kid: The Lost Legacy of Harry Karstens and the First Ascent of Mount McKinley by Tom Walker in History

Description

Notes from the Warsaw Ghetto is the moving account of the horror of the Warsaw Ghetto—written by the recognized archivist and historian of the area while he lived through it. Through anecdotes; stories; and notations—some as brief as was slapped today in Zlota Street;—there emerges the agonizing; eyewitness accounts of human beings caught in the furor of senseless; unrelenting brutality. In the Journal; there is the whole of life in the Ghetto; from the erection of the Wall; in November 1940; for hygienic reasons; through the brief period of deceptive calm to the eventual mass murders. It is a portrait of man tested by crisis; stained at times by the meanness of avarice and self-preservation; illumined more often by moments of nobility.

I am known for blurting out "Harry could do anything!" - he could and he did! Tom Walker's newest book is a fascinating account of this amazing man's life. The drama that surrounded the multiple attempts in the early 1900's to climb Mount McKinley; the highest mountain in North America; was full of hardships; surprises and even lies on an international level. Harry Karsten led the first successful ascent in 1913 and in finding the photographs and "lost" journals of the expedition - Tom Walker has given us a clearer picture of what truly happen before; during and after that remarkable climb.Harry went on to be the first superintendent of Denali National Park - a difficult job to say the least; but then; Harry could do anything. If you're interested in true life adventure; in exciting historical tales; in vivid descriptions of life in Alaska when the tallest peaks were yet to be climbed and the wilderness was nothing like "a park" - then you will enjoy this book. For those coming to Denali; or even just Alaska; I think reading this account first will change the way you look at absolutely everything you see and greatly enhance your visit. My mother-in-law hasn't put her copy down since she started it...0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Detailed life of KarstensBy SCwolvesThis book was delivered fast. BurkholderI have read Howard Stuck's book "10000" Miles by Dog Sled and found it very interesting. I discovered this book on a recent trip to Alaska. While my memory isn't the best I think this book may be even better. The biggest complaint I have is that the book makes references to other books that I now have too find; and read. One by Jack London and one by Billy Mitchell. The sheer toughness of these men and the conditions they worked in is almost unbelievable. I know of no professional athlete that would endure these conditions and yet these men seamed to feel their best when they stood the challenges of the extreme weather.
