The Salem Witch Trials Reader

audiobook The Salem Witch Trials Reader by Frances Hill in History

Description

In this compelling biography; award-winning author Harlow Giles Unger reveals the epic story of James Monroe (1758–1831)—the last of America's Founding Fathers—who transformed a small; fragile nation beset by enemies into a powerful empire stretching “from sea to shining sea.” Like David McCullough's John Adams and Jon Meacham's American Lion; The Last Founding Father is both a superb read and stellar scholarship—action-filled history in the grand tradition.

An Indepth Study Of The Events In Salem Village In 1692By Willard ReedThis is an excellent study of the people involved; including; the accusers; the accused; the judges; the so called guilty; the clergy and those indirectly affected. The author gives an indepth discussion of the Religious doctrine of 17th century Bay area Mass.; which gives a good understanding of why these events occurred. Some of last of this e book is a collection of; how; various history writers have treated this subject; how some fiction writers have used those long ago events and some the plays that have resulted. The author has included excellent notes and an excellent bibliography. I highly recommend the Salem Witch Trials Reader.4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. If At First; You Don't Succeed ...By RozyvaniaI purchased this book in Boston; Mass in 2003 when I went on a Witch Trial Tour and never tried to read it until this past year. It seemed hard to get into so I stopped right away. I tried it a second time and them found reason after reason to not pick it up. (It was too heavy to lay in bed with; I didn't want to ruin my souvenir.) Anyway ... My husband purchased a Kindle for my last birthday and this book was available on Kindle. I read it all the way through and this is my take on it. I found myself reading it in an English / British accent due to the archaic language and that mostly English were settling in Boston at the time. It was funny to catch myself reading it that way. This is very disturbing to read at times; due to the obvious ignorance that ran rampant and at times; laughable. It was actually transcripts mixed with pictures; mixed with actual letters and church surmons from the time. It was at times repetitive and could have been better organized but I guess I should be more understanding and give them some slack considering how long ago this is and how hard it must have been to track down the materials to put this work together. It is definitely worth reading and I would do it again if I wanted to channel my inner English Madam or Brit! No matter how it is put together; if you are fascinated with this period of mass hysteria; you will love the different takes this book lends to this embarrassing time that can't be forgotten.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
