The popular perception of yoga in the West remains for the most part that of a physical fitness program; largely divorced from its historical and spiritual roots. The essays collected here provide a sense of the historical emergence of the classical system presented by Patañjali; a careful examination of the key elements; overall character and contemporary relevance of that system (as found in the Yoga Sutra) and a glimpse of some of the tradition's many important ramifications in later Indian religious history.

This offered an excellent overview of a little-known period of U.S. historyBy John NortonI had expected this book to offer a comprehensive study of the Denver riot; which it did. I knew that California was the scene of numerous racial attacks against Chinese in the 19th Century; having lived there for 20 years and reading about it; but did not know how widespread the problem was; figuring that large numbers of Chinese didn't move past Promontory Point. I live in Colorado now and was grateful for the descriptions of both Chinese life and state politics. I was very impressed; though with the analysis of national politics; which showed how political parties evolve from their roots. The party of Lincoln backing racist laws to save its power in Congress and the White House and the party of Jefferson; already tinged with the bloody shirt; turning on immigrants seeking better lives as it built its two-legged labor and Southern strategies that lasted until Strom Thurmond and his Dixiecrats sought a more welcome home in the GOP and Reagan's "welfare queen" propaganda carried off many big city working people (I'm talking about my Chicago Irish Catholic relatives here) who owed their own success as immigrants to the Democratic Party.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.
