In this reader; Stanglin has put together a tremendous amount of material for the serious Christian thinker who wants an overview of original sources in their own (translated) words. While not exhaustive; it is also not meant to be read cover to cover. Rather; it is appropriate as a guide to eras where you can investigate figures of interest to you. Each section begins with an introduction; and concludes with bibliographic notes for further expansion and information on where to go to learn even more. The selection of writings seems to me; a lay theologian; to take up most of the major themes in historical theology from the early Reformation to the modern period. I appreciated; for instance; the attention to certain important developments; both good and bad; that are sometimes missed in classes on historical theology; such as the so-called "liberation" theologians.Overall; I think this is an excellent text for an entire class on the history of the church through the lens of historical theology. Our theology really is; in fact; a major component of who we are and where we came from; and we do well to understand that context better.
