In this heavily footnoted book; you can see how Lincoln set the stage for 20th Century Presidents to strip away the meaning of the Bill of Rights. Lincoln may have freed the slaves but that was not what the Civil War was all about. It was about realizing the Whig/Republican dream of Alexander Hamilton's wish for a Statist government that crushed Federalism and State's Rights once and for all. Hypocritical in the extreme; Lincoln was the agent of Northern merchant and industrial interests that chafed at the free trade of the South with England and Europe; and thrived on the concept of using tax dollars to support private business in the name of The American System. Lincoln is the one who paved the way for later abuse of Native Americans and the synical exploitation of the freed slaves who became a political tool of the Republican Party. Sound radical? Read the book and see if you agree.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Five StarsBy M. A. VuwerEnlightening. Depressing. Well-documented. Unique analysis on Lincoln.By DouglasThis book is what has been needed for too long. It should be required reading by every High School Senior. Though the book is fairly long it is pretty quick reading and DiLorenzo documents all of the facts he presents and explains them in sufficient detail. Most of the critical reviews I have seen of this book resort to little more than anti-South name calling rather than trying to refute DiLorenzo's arguments.Republican party of today; that stands for less government; state and local control; and free enterprise; wrongly pride themselves as being "The party of Lincoln" and this book explains why.
