The area has a reputation for corruption that Birkbeck's book lays out for everyone to see. I was unaware of Bufalino's hold on the garment industry. I wonder how much "juice" the remnants of the family have today? The PA State Police did a good job of investigating. Quiet DonBy Richard RaymondCompelling and fascinating ... especially having grown-up in Scranton and recognize places and names. The book helps put stories I'd heard in context. One statement by the author stays with me .. his suggestion that the mafia siphoned off much of the money from local economy to keep the area economically depressed. It was depressed for many years... It's parasitic.
