On the eve of its centennial; Carol Dawson and Roger Allen Polson present almost 100 years of history and never-before-seen photographs that track the development of the Texas Highway Department. An agency originally created “to get the farmer out of the mud;†it has gone on to build the vast network of roads that now connects every corner of the state. When the Texas Highway Department (now called the Texas Department of Transportation or TxDOT) was created in 1917; there were only about 200;000 cars in Texas traveling on fewer than a thousand miles of paved roads. Today; after 100 years of the Texas Highway Department; the state boasts over 80;000 miles of paved; state-maintained roads that accommodate more than 25 million vehicles. Sure to interest history enthusiasts and casual readers alike; decades of progress and turmoil; development and disaster; and politics and corruption come together once more in these pages; which tell the remarkable story of an infrastructure 100 years in the making.

This deeply researched treatise shows the connection of sacred mushrooms to the origins of religion thousands of years ago and presents detailed arguments and strong evidence of the ancient psychedelic roots of Christianity. Many have argued the mushroom's role at the origins of Christianity but the Brown's nail it. Sacred mushrooms are not the analog of true religious experience but likely the source.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Take a magical mystery tourBy NancyBlackIt's a page-turner! I'm impressed by the impeccable scholarship and research that went into this work. "The Psychedelic Gospels" is an entertaining delight of thought-provoking exploration. Beyond the years of study that underlie the story; there's a feeling of synchronicity and synergy. It's a love story; as a husband and wife make discovery after discovery; leading to a reconsideration of the foundations and roots of Christianity. This is an authoritative and fascinating contribution to the study of human religion; particularly with regard to entheogens and their place in spiritual practices worldwide. I love the sense of shared exploration; and especially the amazing art revealed. The mysticism and ritual of sacred psychedelic symbolism woven into early Christian artworks are mind-blowing; hidden in plain sight. With this book; we join an unimagined journey.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I have never taken any illicit drugs and don't recommend it but this book has made me look at the same evidence in a new light and the authors make a very compelling argument.I was vaguely familiar with the story of Santa and the Pegan roots associated with it but the authors go into extreme detail on every aspect and it's a real eye-opener.
