Of all the despots of our time; Joseph Stalin lasted the longest and wielded the greatest power; and his secrets have been the most jealously guarded—even after his death. In this book; the first to draw from recently released archives; Robert Conquest gives us Stalin as a child and student; as a revolutionary and communist theoretician; as a political animal skilled in amassing power and absolutely ruthless in maintaining it. He presents the landmarks of Stalin’s rule: the class with Lenin; collectivization; the Great Terror; the Nazi-Soviet pact and the Nazi-Soviet war; the anti-Semitic campaign that preceded his death; and the legacy he left behind. Distilling a lifetime’s study; weaving detail; analysis; and research; Conquest has given us an extraordinarily powerful narrative of this incredible figure.“Thoughtful and thorough and shot through with insight.â€â€”The Washington Post Book World“Definitive . . . a magnificent; even poetic; act of historical retribution.â€â€”The New Leader“Brilliant . . . this book probably is the most cogent and readable account of Stalin’s life yet published.â€â€”The San Diego Union

Please understand this is not a novel; but a book written with historical information that fills in many blanks we all need to fill in.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Get the bookBy zastrongThomas Jefferson is the most brilliant man in the history of the world; in my humble opinion. I have my degree in Constitutional history and can testify that Jefferson understood the principles of Liberty better than any of the Founders; and better than anyone else whose work I've ever come across. This particular book is one that everyone should own. It's set up well; is easy to maneuver; and has Jefferson's greatest gems all in one package.1 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Good bookBy Brian J. DukeNeat book. has a lot of the pertinent documents that Jefferson wrote and correspondences he had with people in his time. I wish there were some more biographical information in it; but it's a great source for primary material.
