The Penguin Atlas of African History: Revised Edition

audiobook The Penguin Atlas of African History: Revised Edition by Colin McEvedy in History

Description

In 1895; Bridget Cleary; a strong-minded and independent young woman; disappeared from her house in rural Tipperary. At first her family claimed she had been taken by fairies-but then her badly burned body was found in a shallow grave. Bridget's husband; father; aunt; and four cousins were arrested and tried for murder; creating one of the first mass media sensations in Ireland and England as people tried to make sense of what had happened. Meanwhile; Tory newspapers in Ireland and Britain seized on the scandal to discredit the cause of Home Rule; playing on lingering fears of a savage Irish peasantry. Combining historical detective work; acute social analysis; and meticulous original scholarship; Angela Bourke investigates Bridget's murder.

I guess the visual aspects help me understand history through the changing borders. This is the cause of so much strife in world in our modern world. So it applies to the why of events that take place. This book starts with the "birth" of man and moves forward fine their. I purchased it originally because I wanted to understand the outcome of the colonial period. But once I started looking at it; I couldn't get my nose out. Each map delineates important changes and why they occurred. It is an evocative way to learn history.I recommend this book for anyone from grade school on up as a way to explore history in a visual and memorable way. It puts events into an order and context.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting Geological; Political; and Social HistoryBy Re-bopIf you go all the way back to the supercontinent; Pangaea–showing how the land masses separated from it and assembled in the configuration that we now know as the map of the world–you are certainly ambitious in the scope of your study. McEvedy is ambitious and; in a study that contains extensive use of maps–every facing page; in fact–he creates an integrated whole; without it being tedious or belabored. It's a very interesting and unique perspective on African History.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Wonderful bookBy susan searsLove this book;great service.
