FewkesI was aware of The Council of Nicea; but Father Bonpane's observation that the Council was part of a plan by the Emperor Constantine to consolidate his power in The Roman Empire with the cooperation of the Church hierarchy and thereby bring the citizenry under control was very revealing. My understanding; and it was very favorable to the Catholic Church; was that the Emperor had a conversion experience. Now that I am older and realize much more how power works in the world; Father Bonpane's observation makes perfect sense to me.The Catholic Church's history of inflicting pain and death on the very people that they are supposed to protect and nurture is a painful revelation. It is something that I have felt for a long time and Father Bonpane's book brought those feelings into focus.Jesus' message in the Gospels is that we should love one another. It is not a message that is confined simply to those who profess Christianty; every human hears this voice in the deepest recesses of his or her soul.
