In the thirty-four years since his retirement; Henry (Hank) Aaron’s reputation has only grown in magnitude. But his influence extends beyond statistics; and at long last here is the first definitive biography of one of baseball’s immortal figures. Based on meticulous research and extensive interviews The Last Hero reveals how Aaron navigated the upheavals of his time—fighting against racism while at the same time benefiting from racial progress—and how he achieved his goal of continuing Jackie Robinson’s mission to obtain full equality for African Americans; both in baseball and society; while he lived uncomfortably in the public eye. Eloquently written; detailed and penetrating; this is a revelatory portrait of a complicated; private man who through sports became an enduring American icon.

A worthwhile read by a prolific writer of history.By girasoleRobert Watson has researched very well and writes a compelling story about the horrors and one of many conspiracies of WWII; along with a skillful narrative . A very good read. The only drawback this reader found was that there are so many people involved that at times it was not easy to remember them all.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Who sank this ship? Ultimately; the German's.By Jacquelyn J. CacciaOriginally planned to be a jewel in Germany's crown; this ship was ultimately used as a troop transport and finally was used to more concentration camp prisoners who worked for German industrialists. The ship was sunk at the end of the war killing the prisoners. The author gives a clear explanation of the events. I highly recommend this life title know episode of WWII history.3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Little known piece of historyBy LdymprI have to admit when this book came up on my recommendation list; I thought it must be a joke; by the title alone. One of the news shows I watched went into more depth with their author. I checked the price; a little high for me. After three days I decided to get it. I'm very glad I did. A well written book with plenty of research involved. As with many stories of the war; their are few happy endings. Thank you for the tenacity to flesh this story out. Anyone interested in this time period should read this book. My hope is that some of these families find comport in the final resting places of family members. Thank you for your hard workMy great uncle was on a hell ship; he made it home. He never even knew about this ship.
