The Myth of Martyrdom: What Really Drives Suicide Bombers; Rampage Shooters; and Other Self-Destructive Killers

audiobook The Myth of Martyrdom: What Really Drives Suicide Bombers; Rampage Shooters; and Other Self-Destructive Killers by Adam Lankford in History

Description

In 1682; ten years before the infamous Salem witch trials; the town of Great Island; New Hampshire; was plagued by mysterious events: strange; demonic noises; unexplainable movement of objects; and hundreds of stones that rained upon a local tavern and appeared at random inside its walls. Town residents blamed what they called "Lithobolia" or "the stone-throwing devil." In this lively account; Emerson Baker shows how witchcraft hysteria overtook one town and spawned copycat incidents elsewhere in New England; prefiguring the horrors of Salem. In the process; he illuminates a cross-section of colonial society and overturns many popular assumptions about witchcraft in the seventeenth century.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great PerspectiveBy Dr. Don MeyerhoffI have enjoyed the numerous journal articles and writings of Dr. Lankford. This work provides informed balance to many misconceptions of suicide attackers/terrorists. Through numerous case examples and the use of trusted extant academic literature he has provided an improved lens through which we can examine this aspect of a greater overall phenomena.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Worth the timeBy TWWI have often wondered how anyone could ever be a suicide bomber and remembered reading about kids with Downs syndrome being bombers. This book explained well how someone could do a suicide attack. Now I understand.3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Martyrdom Myth Mayhem Modifies MindsBy happygeezerI was doing research for an article on gun control and mass murder rampages and found this book to be very informative in substantiating my hypothesis that headline grabbing gunmen are at heart suicidal individuals with a grudge against society.
