This book is directed mainly to military historians and Civil War enthusiasts. A third edition originally published privately in 2002; it follows a company of Michigan Cavalry from its organization in 1862 to its disbandment in late 1865. Some individuals in the unit are followed throughout the book. The book shows details of life in the cavalry during the period; and problems encountered by both the men and their commanders. It was carefully researched over many years; and presented in a direct manner.

Readers should remember that it was not written as a historical novel; but it is an old novel; with the author setting the story in his time period. This is important to remember because it means there are lots of allusions and references that may not be clear to the modern reader. It is more difficult for modern readers to read between the lines. For example; the references to women's honor; and the unrequited gay love that is the fuel behind much of the evil in the story. And the calling of pawn brokers/money lenders "Jews"; is from that era. The story takes the reader from England to the Mediterranean and back through Europe; which is a fascinating journey. And when the protagonist is accused of a crime; his defense hires a detective to retrace his steps; so we make the journey again.
