Jonathan Berkey surveys the religious history of the peoples of the Near East from approximately 600 to 1800 c.e. After examining the religious scene in the Near East in late antiquity; he investigates Islam's first century; the "classical" period from the accession of the Abbasids to the rise of the Buyid amirs. He then traces the emergence of new forms of Islam in the middle period; deftly showing how Islam emerged slowly as part of a prolonged process.

It opened a whole new field of study for me.4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. A very useful and instructive bookBy A CustomerThis book is useful to help its reader to understand certain aspects of the gunpowder revolution; and it is particularly useful to point out the political effect of the change in military technology. The book does not give as much tactical detail as one might wish; but it is likely that anyone who wishes to study the subject seriously (and Parker's work is obviously intended for the serious reader)will have a copy of Delbruck; and that will give access to detailed descriptions of certain of the important tactical developments leading up to the introduction of massed gunpowder weapons.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
