Well-Presented Classic at Affordable PriceBy DianaThis is an essential basic text for the life of Muhammad; though I will leave it to the scholars to determine the extent to which Waqidi's work can be taken as reliable history. It is wonderful to have it in English at last; and in better English than is usually found in translations from Arabic. This is an excellent companion to Alfred Guillaume's rendering of Ibn Ishaq/Ibn Hisham.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Fascinating; easy to read early source on the Messenger MuhammadBy ElaineA fascinating account of who the Messenger Muhammad was; what he did and what he taught. This is one of the earliest sources and is a foundational document for Islamic doctrine. The translation is excellent: it captures the material in a style that's engaging and easy to read. I'm so glad it's finally been translated into English for the first time.7 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Tremendously important; but what a price!?!By CustomerAl-Wakidy is a crucial source for the early history of Islam; and his book was widely excerpted later. As such this translation is very welcome. But ... at the price asked; who can afford to buy a copy? The actual cost of manufacture cannot be more than $30; and I doubt that the translator is getting paid much; so the rest seems to me very much like publisher's greed. What a shame.
