The Life and Times of General Andrew Pickens: Revolutionary War Hero; American Founder

DOC The Life and Times of General Andrew Pickens: Revolutionary War Hero; American Founder by Rod Andrew in History

Description

Although military rockets have been used since the Middle Ages; it was not until the Soviet Union pioneered the concept of Multiple Rocket Launchers (MRLs); in the late 1930s; that they emerged as a decisive weapon. In the modern era; these Soviet/Russian Katyushas have served in combat in Afghanistan; Chechnya; and Georgia. Developed to fill the operational need for massed artillery fire support; the MRL possesses enormous destructive power and a devastating psychological impact. This New Vanguard provides a survey of Soviet and Russian Federation MRLs from the beginning of their development in 1938 to the present. It focuses on the history; design; and specifications of self-propelled ground MRL systems; but also covers towed; static; railway; and naval mounts. It highlights the many variants of the principal systems; and includes MRL unit tables of organization and equipment; information on MRL munition types; and coverage of dedicated MRL resupply vehicles.

An excellent work!By Brian M RowlandI've read several books on the life and war exploits of General Andrew Pickens; and from them; learned a sort of patchwork understanding of his service and his life. The "Life and Times of General Andrew Pickens" really helped pull it all together; put missing pieces into place; and educate me on matters and events I never knew of (e.g.; Treaty of Colraine). As General Pickens is my 5th great grandfather (and Dr. Thomas Reese my 4th great grandfather); I am exceedingly grateful to the author; Rod Andrew; for what must have been uncountable hours of research; thought and work. It is very well-written and easier to read than other books on the subject (because it does not assume a certain degree of pre-existing historical knowledge as some books I've read do).Family relationship aside; General Andrew Pickens is a true American hero of his time and; other than questions regarding slavery; the character he possessed and lifetime commitment he demonstrated seem terribly lacking in our modern era. His story is an excellent lesson.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. An engaging read which taught me a lotBy DVHCMHA very enjoyable volume. Knowing virtually nothing about Pickens before reading this book; I was amazed at how important he was to pre- and post-Revolutionary War affairs in the Upcountry. Without his leadership; the militia would not have played so critical a role in our victory in the South; and his work with the Indians was significant and completely new to me. Not only was this book informative; but it was an engaging read. It should do a lot to show the importance of the southern campaign leading up to Yorktown; about which so few Americans are aware.0 of 1 people found the following review helpful.
