This number has haunted western civilization since the first concentration camp was liberated at the end of World War II. Leonard Gross has through his through research and personal interviews put names and faces to help in understanding that the number 6 million were flesh and blood humans whose only crime was being Jewish. Through his writing he takes you on personal journeys of survival of a dozen Berlin Jews. With the help of various German Gentiles; underground networks and brave; ordinary anti Nazi citizens; along with their own guile and will to survive are stories of incredible terror; loneliness; anxiety and danger for the hunted and their saviors. Moving real-life storyBy Project DiamondsThis book is outstanding. I found it compelling; both for stories I had not seen before and for its detailed background information. The author's style made this read almost like a novel; except that in a novel the role that luck played in the survival of so many people would seem unbelievable. The idea that any Jews at all survived the war while hiding right in the capital is astounding; the people profiled by Gross are of many different backgrounds and personality types. I did have some trouble with keeping the stories straight in my head. I've read quite a bit on this period in history and know a lot about the holocaust and the period leading up to it. I did not know how many Jews went underground and managed to stay in Berlin during the war. Fascinating look into the extraordinary lives of these brave people who defied the Nazis and managed to survive against the most incredible odds. I found it very easy to read and the writer was able to make each persons story come to life in a way that many non fiction writers struggle with.
